Who are we?

shadwell bus

We are a small charity based in Limehouse, set up to provide transport to voluntary and community groups in Tower Hamlets

Who can use it?

Any genuine community or voluntary group can apply for membership of THCT. We ask you to complete an application form, and provide us with copies of your constitution and accounts. The membership fees are on a scale, so that those with no money pay least! Lots of groups need transport - pensioners' clubs, playgroups, youth clubs - all sorts are welcome at THCT, provided you keep to a few simple rules.

What sort of transport is available?

We have a fleet of minibuses from 11 to 16 seaters, all equipped with seat belts. Some have tail-lifts to carry wheelchairs, and low steps and rails to make it easier to get on and off. Some have special harnesses for small children. Some have roof-racks and towbars. We also have a couple of vans for moving goods and equipment

Who can drive?

shadwell bus THCT Volunteers are recruited to compliment the activities of affiliated organisations that have scarce resources or by virtue of the activity (disability or elders groups for example), would find it impossible to provide their own driver. Volunteers are re-imbursed with reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred. Volunteering is a stepping stone to build on skills and experience to gain paid employment, and for some it is the social aspect of doing something in their spare time and being involved in the community. THCT Volunteers play a pivotal role in services to transport - indeed we would not be able to work in the way we do without them. They bring skills, experience, time and commitment and our member organisations appreciate the fact that volunteers give their time freely, adding a feeling of being valued. We will provide training in minibus driving for your volunteers. They need to be aged 21 - 70, with at least two years driving experience and a clean licence. We can call on volunteer drivers, but only for elderly, disabled or ethnic minority women's groups.

And how much does it cost?

We aim to keep our vehicle hire charges as low as possible. We charge a small booking fee, and mileage. This includes your fuel and insurance. There is a lower rate for long distance trips

What else can THCT offer?

We have a workshop to maintain our own vehicles. We can provide maintenance and repair services to local groups who own their own minibuses and we can arrange "brokerage" deals so that groups can share their minibuses with others.

We also organise a Access Bus service for people who find it difficult to get about on public transport. This is a limited service which visits shopping centers only.
